Finding the Right Carpet for Your Home

Carpet remains one of the most popular flooring choices for Jacksonville homeowners — and it's easy to see why. Nothing adds warmth, comfort, and quiet to a room the way carpet does. Whether you're updating a bedroom, a family room, or an entire home, the right carpet makes a space feel finished and inviting.

What Makes a Good Carpet?

Not all carpet is created equal. The two biggest factors in carpet performance are fiber type and construction. Understanding both will help you make a choice you'll be happy with for years.

Carpet Fiber Types

  • Nylon — The gold standard for durability. Nylon carpet stands up to heavy foot traffic, resists staining, and bounces back from crushing. It's the best choice for busy households with kids and pets.

  • Polyester — Exceptionally soft and naturally stain resistant. Polyester offers beautiful color clarity and is a great value for lower traffic areas like bedrooms.

  • SmartStrand/Triexta — Mohawk's proprietary fiber that combines the softness of polyester with the durability of nylon. A strong performer for family rooms and high use areas.

Carpet Construction

Beyond fiber, the way carpet is constructed affects how it looks and wears over time. One of the most important but overlooked factors is twist level — the number of times the fiber is twisted per inch. A higher twist level means the carpet holds its shape better under foot traffic and resists matting and crushing over time. When you're comparing carpets in our showroom, twist level is one of the first things we'll point out because it's one of the best indicators of long term performance.

Cut pile, loop pile, and cut and loop each have different performance characteristics as well. We'll walk you through the options so you can see and feel the difference firsthand.

What About Padding?

The pad beneath your carpet plays an important role in how your floor feels and performs — but it's important to understand what pad can and can't do. Most carpet today is installed over rebond pad, which is made from recycled foam and comes in varying densities and thicknesses.

A quality pad will make your carpet feel better underfoot and provide insulation against sound and temperature. What it won't do is make a lesser quality carpet last longer. The longevity of your carpet comes down to the construction of the fiber itself and regular maintenance — vacuuming consistently and addressing spills promptly. Putting an upgraded pad under a builder grade carpet is a common misconception we want to save you from.

Our job is to help you find the right carpet and the right pad together so you get the performance and the feel you're looking for — without spending money in the wrong place.

Is Carpet Right for Florida Homes?

Absolutely — with the right product and proper care. Modern carpets are more moisture resistant than ever. In Florida we recommend keeping humidity levels controlled and addressing spills immediately. Carpet performs beautifully in bedrooms, living rooms, and low moisture areas of the home.
